What an AI meditation companion should be

An "AI meditation app" often means a content library with a chatbot added as a concierge for recommending tracks. MIST starts from a different premise.

MIST's five AI guides are designed to support inquiry and connect conversation with practice.

Five guides, five lenses

  • The Sage is prompted to draw from Eastern and yogic traditions — the Gita, the Upanishads, the practice lineages behind mantra and breath.
  • The Stoic returns you to what is within your control, in the tradition of Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca.
  • The Scientist is designed to ground answers in published research and keep the hedges — what studies actually found, not what headlines said.
  • The Peer talks like a thoughtful friend who happens to practice.
  • The Oracle draws on all of it, as the moment requires.

Ask them anything — the roots of AUM, the evidence on slow breathing, a verse worth sitting with tonight. Conversation is optional; every MIST practice can also be used without chatting.

Teaching ends in practice, not in more chat

The chat can lead directly into a breathing, mantra, body-scan, or open-meditation practice. MIST is designed to support that handoff from conversation into practice.

Some details on the AI Guides

  • The guides are generative AI.
  • The AI Guides make no medical claims and offer no diagnosis or treatment; MIST is a wellness app.
  • Conversations pass through a safety layer designed to recognize language that may call for immediate support and to surface relevant crisis resources.
  • MIST is designed to reduce unsupported claims: its own scripture renderings are compared with cited sources, and research-dependent statements should show references. The guides can still be inaccurate.
  • Journal, mood, and conversation content is not sold, used for advertising, or sent to analytics tools. Some chat content is processed by AI providers to generate responses; deletion is self-serve and retention is explained in the Privacy Policy.

The rest of the sanctuary

Around the guides, MIST includes breathwork practices, mantras with visual cues, guided body scans, an open timer with a gong, Journeys through the Gita, the Stoics, and the Upanishads, and original ambient albums composed for the app.

Common questions

Is an AI guide a replacement for a human meditation teacher?

No. It is closer to a knowledgeable companion available when you want it. It can explain concepts, support reflection, and start a practice with you, but it can also be wrong. A living teacher, a sangha, or a clinician offers things beyond the scope of software.

Which AI does MIST use?

MIST uses third-party foundation models behind its own safety and content layers. In the app you'll meet the guides by name, not the brand underneath.

Do I have to chat to use MIST?

No. Breathwork, mantra, body scans, open meditation, music, and Journeys all work without a single message.
